In many countries around the world, elections are a time when political competition often spills over into violence, intimidation, corruption and dirty tricks.  Human rights defenders in these societies often try to prevent such phenomena by monitoring both the voting and the campaigning processes, documenting and reporting on violations and working wtih civil society to ensure the right to vote of the citizenry is respected and guaranteed.
